Friends,
I have indeed completed my quest to play a marathon distance of golf in one day. I played at Vistal Golf Club last Sunday in 110 degrees of Arizona sun!
Thank you so much to everyone who participated and contributed to the cause. It looks like I will have raised over $2,500 for the Special Olympics of Arizona...although it is not too late to visit www.pgagolfday.com and submit your contributions! Overall, Arizona PGA Professionals taking part are approaching $150,000 raised. Very cool.
Regarding my day at Vistal, I have to admit this was a challenge. I started at 5:00 in the morning, played my first 18 holes in 90 minutes, and continued for nearly an even 12 hours. I had my clubs in the car at 5:00 that evening.
Below, you will find some scoring information and miscellaneous data that I was able to capture during my trek. I think you will find it interesting and also humorous. I've also included a photo of my caddie and I.
As far as the World Record attempt, I should provide a little background. The record itself was originated last year during this program, and attempted by only several people. Therefore, the number to beat, in my opinion, is quite achievable. The record setter, Jake Sand, played a difficult golf course and shot 496. I am happy to say that I was able to shoot 477 (+11) for the day. That said, I believe I will have a difficult time verifying the score with the Guinness Book because of a lack of witnesses. I played many holes alone and don't believe that the Book will just take my word for it (although I did not cheat!). That said, it has sparked an interest to pursue this record with a bit more vigor and recruit some witnesses, helpers, etc who might like to be involved in such a record attempt. There have been several who have come forward already. Maybe in the fall we'll give it another try...nobody says I need to do it in triple figure temperatures!
Thank you so much for your support. It has been a great excuse to reconnect with many people whom I have not been in touch with for quite some time.
